Nathan Pritikin Research Foundation Bibliography - Published Research Articles
Tragically, millions of Americans, including many doctors, still believe that the only way to treat heart disease and other illnesses is with surgeries and drugs. There is very little emphasis on prevention or diet.
That’s why, for the past 30 years, we've devoted funds solely for our nonprofit Nathan Pritikin Research Foundation (NPRF). The purpose of NPRF is to publish research that persistently and persuasively proves to doctors, health institutions, and the media that the best way to halt most of modern society’s diseases is the simplest way – with good nutrition and exercise. We believe that the right message, if delivered well, and if bolstered by research, will save millions of lives.
Lead by scientists at UCLA, NPRF has published more than 100 studies in peer reviewed journals like the New England Journal of Medicine documenting the extraordinary benefits of the Pritikin Program. It is research demonstrates that dietary changes and regular exercise can prevent, treat, and reverse – rapidly and economically – America’s epidemic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and many cancers. It is research that saves lives.

2008 Research Studies
The Pritikin Program was found to reduce prostate cancer cell growth by as much as 45%, which should drastically reduce the risk for clinical cancer. Reductions in serum insulin, free testosterone, estradiol, and IGF-1 along with a rise in SHBG and IGFBP-1 appear important. The decrease in IGF-1 appears to be the most significant change because IGF-1 normally prevents cells from going into apoptosis (cell death).

Studying the effect of dietary fat on prostate cancer development, UCLA researchers found that animals on a low-fat diet (12% calories from fat) were significantly less likely to develop invasive prostate cancer compared to animals on a high-fat diet (42% calories from fat).

The Pritikin Program was found to significantly reduce the growth of prostate epithelial cells, which could reduce risk of Benign Prostate Hyperplasis, common among men 50 and older in industrialized societies.

For significant weight loss and long-term maintenance, UCLA researchers assert importance of regular exercise and a healthy low-fat diet (high in fiber-rich whole foods).
